84 Charing Cross Road

A short post for a short book … Helene Hanff’s 84, Charing Cross Road is a fun little book about books and those who love them. It’s less than 100 pages and is really even shorter than that, as many of the pages have lots of white space. It’s written in epistolary form — a sub-genre I love — and it’s made up of letters between Helene Hanff and a group of people working at Marks & Co., Booksellers. Helene begins the correspondence with a list of used books she wants and a five dollar bill to cover the costs. Frank Doel from the shop replies. They continue to correspond about her book requests, but they also, slowly, become friends. Helene is a funny, witty correspondent while Frank is much more formal and more guarded, but slowly their letters become more personal and a real friendship emerges. It’s a treat to follow the way their letters change as they begin to address each other more personally, to include details about their lives, and to share their love of books.

Frank is not the only one who keeps up a correspondence with Helene; the whole bookshop comes to anticipate her letters and several others from the shop write her back, although they do so behind Frank’s back because he feels as though Helene is his correspondent. The letters begin in 1949, a time of food rationing in England, and to thank the shop for all the books they have found for her, Helene begins to send them parcels with meat and eggs and other things hard to find. Soon Frank’s family is writing Helene to thank her for her gifts. Everyone tries to persuade Helene to come visit London, which she would love to do, if only she had more money.

The book is fun both for all the book talk — Helene has very decided opinions and tastes in books which she is not shy about expressing — and also for the glimpse it gives into London life in the late 1940s through the 1960s. The correspondence continues for over two decades, so we can follow the paths the characters’ lives take as they navigate the tricky post-war time.

I’m not entirely sure whether to call this a novel or not. As I understand it, it’s a true story; Helene Hanff really was a writer who corresponded with the people at Marks & Co. Booksellers, but I’m not sure whether these letters were the ones they really sent. Either way, it’s highly entertaining, and if you are someone who likes books about books, not to be missed. via

Dan In Real Life

This is another one of those: 'I wanted to read awhile ago and has taken awhile to get around to' screenplays and I'm glad that I have now finally read it.

I remember seeing a brief trailer some time ago and the instant feeling I got was that 'this is one for me.' It belongs in the wide genre of indie type films that centre around family, a longing from the norm and feature a great blend of humour and drama. So I was eager to know if it would hold up to its initial impact and deliver. And the verdict is: it does.

The story is about a widowed father and newspaper advice columnist who has his hands full with raising his three daughters and being practical to let go and enjoy something in life. But then the family head off on vacation and his rational and in control side is put to the test when he falls for a woman.

The screenplay is a heartfelt and feel good read. It embodies a strong driving force via realistic characters and the humour and drama that they bring. It has a unique blend of humour, familial conflict and emotional upheaval that makes for a warming and layered read. It has a great balance and rhythm to its scene and content that keeps it pacey and interesting. However, there are one or two potentially cheesy and questionable moments, which are to be expected within this type of story.

The screenplay is ultimately about family and personal happiness, what that is, how it should be approached and how the two can exist in harmony. It's about finding a balance with the mundane rational side and zest for the irrational and unpredictable side in order to live in real life now and again.

I can't wait to see the film and I hope it holds up to my now high hopes and expectations. via

Tom Brokaw Accident

Tom Brokaw Accident, Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and his wife escaped injury in a three-car accident on a New York City highway that killed one woman and injured a mail truck driver this afternoon. The Brokaws say a woman driving an SUV apparently lost control while trying to avoid a spool of cable. She was killed.

“The Tom Brokaw were in the far left lane when they noticed a spool of cable bouncing along the far right lane. Just then, a green SUV in the right lane came up fast and tried to avoid the cable. The driver lost control of her vehicle and slid into the middle lane, forcing a mail truck into the Brokaw lane of traffic.

“As the mail truck careened into the Tom Brokaw lane, Tom Brokaw hit the brakes hard and skidded along the median. When the mail truck catapulted the median the Brokaw vehicle slid into it. Neither Tom nor Meredith were injured but tragically the driver of the SUV was thrown from her vehicle and killed.

Pelham police officer had been shot and killed early Friday morning while on duty. Pelham Police Department's press release reads:

"On Thursday, Dec 3, at 2350 hours, a Pelham Police Officer was shot and fatally wounded during a traffic stop on I-65 in Pelham. The Officer's name will be withheld until all relatives have been notified. The incident is being investigated as a Murder of a Police Officer.

A white male is in custody in connection to the death. The individual will be named once the formal charges have been filed. The investigation continues at this time and additional information will be released when appropriate to the investigation. Delusional Disorder | Paranoid Personality Disorder

Elizabeth Smart was just 14 when she was abducted by the self proclaimed prophet of god – Brian David Mitchell. Mitchell married Smart in a religious ceremony and then raped her. He was caught in 2003 after nine months of abducting Elizabeth. The defense attorney has maintained that Mitchell has delusional disorder and is not fit to stand trial.

For the third time, it would be judged by the District Court if Mitchell is fit or not. If Mitchell is found fit he would have to stand a trial and in the case if he is found to be suffering from a delusional disorder, he would be sent to a mental health facility.

During the previous two hearings of the case Mitchell was found singing hymns in the court room. He even yelled at a judge at some point during the hearing. In the hospital Mitchell has refused any medication given to him and a judge during the previous hearing decided against the forced administration of medicines.

Mitchell is said to be suffering from a delusional disorder that has made him to think that he is prophet and

inventing his own religion.

On the other prosecutors reportedly have built a water tight case against Mitchell and are ready to expose the façade of delusional disorder. Their first attack would be based on a report by psychiatrist Michael Welner.

Prosecutors have also included religious authorities to refute the claims of delusional disorder.

Among the prosecution witnesses would be Mitchell’s previous wife’s mother and her sister.

Defense on the other hand is also calling psychiatrists to prove that Mitchell indeed is not competent. via

Sorry I haven't been writing. I was under the impression that the joy that I felt after I was hit would last forever. I really felt that way, if not just trying to feel that way. But here I am. Still here. Still basking in the grace and glory of my God, yet destroyed inside. It has been just over two months since I have felt ok and I don't want to write all the time when I am down. I don't want to sit and whine all over the internet, puking downers all over your monitors. So I will write about it a little, then back off. The stupid thing is, these are the times I really feel like writing.

Sorry for the last post, I meant it to be a joke, not condemnation, but maybe the joke isn't funny. I will and always will hate when people get into cars while drunk, if you do it, you are doing a very stupid and selfish thing. However, I do not know the woman I was joking about, so it was wrong of me to poke fun of her.

On a lighter note, my mom pulled out my old report cards on Thanksgiving so she could show my wife what a jerk was throughout my entire life, not just now. I can't believe she even still had them. The grades were average, ridiculously average and all of my teachers made a note of that. "Adam is much smarter than this." "If he would stop talking and apply himself, he would be golden."
